PB&A used their in-house soil nail program, “Winslope” in order to develop the design for FCI (Flatiron) Contractors, for this 83 ft. excavation. Because of the unusually high forces on the nails, following the general formula for soil nailing would have resulted in extraordinarily long nails. “Winslope” was used to engineer a post-tensioned soil nailing design, turning the system from passive to active, thus minimizing deformation, which was imperative given that Highway 80 runs adjacent to the excavation. The end result was a more economical and rigid system utilizing shorter nails.
